The Change Room

Florence Arts Centre, Cumbria. july 2024

In 2021 I established an informal residency and working group between four early-career artists based in Manchester, and Florence Arts Centre, Cumbria. I was interested in artist research methods, influenced by the Artist Placement Group and Portland Sculpture Quarry Trust, while not being placed in an academic environment.

This exhibition, jointly between Anna Clough, Sam Evans and myself, marks the third year of this developing relationship. It is an artistic response to site and collaboration - with each other, specifically to the changing room of the defunct (but last-working in Europe) deep iron ore mine, and to the wider economic and cultural heritage and contemporary context of West Cumbria.

As a body of work, it plays with residue, fragments, and the relationship betweeen sculpture and pictorial tradition.
